Such a work is supposed to contain the essentials of the Encyclopaedia, but the definition of what the essentials are is a ready subject of discussion, and brevity easily comes in conflict with them. The aim of the present work is to present the reader with a condensation of the subject-matter of the Encyclopaedia of Islam in brief, orderly, and intelligible form. The Editors of the Encyclopaedia of Islam remember with respect and gratitude the unremitting support, in every possible form, which they enjoyed from him during his directorship, which unfortunately lasted only four years. He saw the first draft, but his untimely death on 5 December 1993 prevented him from seeing the final result. Brill who, early in 1992, suggested the compilation of the present work.
